Fall of 1973 Westlake added Girls Basketball to their athletic program. There were 22 girls that started that year but the numbers grew smaller as their time was limited to only 5th period with no after school practice availability due to the boys using the only gym at the time. Only four girls had any previous basketball experience. Led by Minton White they girls ended their first year with a record of 2 wins and 4 losses. The following year Jane Patterson became the coach of 24 girls and the team entered UIL competition for the first year. The team had several coaches during the early years of the program. Nancy Burkhalter led the girls for three years with a combined record of 26 wins and 19 losses.

Coach Cathy Self became the coach in the Fall of 1979. During Coach Self’s time as coach she was elected as an All Centex Coach, she started the first weight training program for girls basketball, and led them to their first South Zone Championship in 1980 but that was only the beginning for Coach Self. During her time as the girls head basketball coach Westlake grew to be one of the premiere programs in the state with 13 district championships and three state championships two of which were back to back in 1995 and 1996. Spring of 2000 Coach Self announced that she would be leaving Westlake. This was a shock to everyone. The next few years brought three new coaches, Mike Martin, Laura Zouzalik, and our current coach, Keith Smith. Even with coaching changes the Lady Chaps remained strong. The next few years more championships and trophies were won including:

2003 District Champions and State Semi Finalist
2004 District Champions and Area Finalist

Coach Keith Smith has coached the Lady Chaps since the 2004 - 2005 season and has compiled the following since his first season at Westlake.

The Lady Chaps are off to a great start with Coach Smith who is in his sixth season.
